Trowse is called a model village because it was built by the Colman family during the 1800s for their workers at Colman's mustard factory.
The term "model village" was used in a sense of an ideal to which developers could aspire. Colman's wanted to give their workers a sense of community and good quality housing. The houses used to have the Colmans mustard, yellow front doors and today when you look around Trowse you will see some homes still have their doors painted in the distinctive yellow.
The Colman family still own much of the land surrounding Trowse but there's another old, well-known family who also shares Trowse, May Gurney. They had their civil engineering and construction company in Trowse which started in a little shed in 1912. The business was acquired by Kier Group in 2013.
The original Trowse village was located around the watermill and it's the watermill that gave the village its name. Trowse comes from the old word "Trouse" which means grating of wood or iron which could be lowered like a gate to allow water in from a dam into the mill run to turn the water wheel.
Trowse is a pretty, Norfolk village within walking distance to the city of Norwich. People flock to Trowse for walks, picnics, activities, feed the ducks, eat and drink or just chill. Many people come to Trowse to access the 280 acres of beautiful countryside that Whitlingham Country Park has to offer. The country park with its stunning lake is perfect for dog walkers, birdwatchers, cyclists and family days out.
Trowse also offers activities for the more adventurous, like sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, climbing and archery.
There's even skiing, snowboarding and tubing on the dry slopes at Norfolk snowsports club. You'll never get bored living in Trowse!
Community life centres around Trowse common; this is overlooked by The River Green vegetarian restaurant, as well as the Trowse village shops.
For friendly, family-run pubs that offer great food, there is The White Horse and in Upper Trowse there is The Crown Point Tavern.
