South of Norfolk lies Wymondham, pronounced Windum for those who don't know.
In Anglo-Saxon times the "ham" probably meant village or settlement.
Wymondham town is historic, with a market that dates back to 1204 and comes with a half-timbered market cross. In days long gone, the market cross was probably used for punishing traders who didn't comply with the rules!
These days the market cross is a happier place and houses the tourist information centre.
Wymondham contains many well-preserved buildings many dating back to the 15th century but many were also lost in The Great Fire of Wymondham in 1615. The market cross also burnt down during the Great Fire of Wymondham but luckily it was rebuilt in 1617.
Wymondham market was a trailblazer in 2000 as it was the first in the UK to hold a farmers market, now farmers markets are everywhere but always remember it all started in Wymondham! The market is still active; you'll find stallholders selling the best local produce such as eggs, cheese, meat, ales and cakes.
The magnificent Wymondham Abbey was built in 1107 and started life as a monastery, initially a small building just housing twelve monks. It grew in size and wealth over the centuries and in 1448 it was granted permission to become an Abbey.
These days the Abbey is open daily and it attracts approximately 20,000 visitors every year.
The pretty town of Wymondham has many shops, lovely restaurants, trendy coffee places, and pubs. The town also hosts lots of events including the ever so popular Wymondham Music Festival.
The Guardian once described Wymondham as 'a higgledy streetscape of monastic fragments and Georgian cottages, spiked with a bohemian, eccentric edge'.
For commuters, there are good links to Norwich, Cambridge and London and for those who now work from home, the broadband speed is good.
